In class we created a storyboard for a film opening for a given genre. Our genre was an action film and the brief was an independent action film with a young protagonist, which is aimed towards an adult audience. With that in mind we created actor names because we believe a real independent film wouldn't be able to afford A-List actors as well as the props needed for an action film. As well as this we had to think about which conventions would be possible for an independent film and which conventions are vital. We decided on an alpha male character being chased by an antagonist. We believed the opening should feature a car chase straight away so the opening is exciting because the rest of the film may not be as exhilarating as a James Bond film because it is independent. Sounds like car engines revving and smashing sounds were included on the storyboard because we think this are audio conventions which will engage the audience. Uses and Gratifications theory suggests people are likely to want to see the film because it gives them an experience which they could not do in their own lives.
Doing this activity with the Jelly Babies has made our storyboard more interactive and gives some idea of what the actors would be doing in which part of the scenes. Also doing this task has taught us the order of titles so we can create a legit film opening when we are ready to do it. So our product seems like a professional film opening the title sequence needs to follow the correct rules and guidelines and doing this task with the Jelly Babies is more research into that so we are fully prepared.
This is our storyboard in order, displaying the titles, shots, audio, on screen action and transitions.
