Analysis of Film Opening

This film 'Cyberbully' is really relevant to the sort of topic Peacock Productions are planning on shooting a film opening about when it comes to our own film opening. This is the only clip of the beginning of the film I could find on YouTube and I will only be analysing the first 2 minutes of the clip which I believe is the opening.

Camera Angles
The film opening centres around the use of the main characters laptop and there are a lot of close ups on the screen, showing what is being typed from character to character.

Editing
The editing in the film opening is quite slow paced. This is to relax the audience into the film so they can pay attention to the key parts of the opening like what is being typed on the computer. This is foreshadowing the problems social networking can cause so the audience will appreciate the slow paced editing allowing them time to read.

Sound
The sounds of typing and the sound indicating messages have been sent and received highlights the overall theme of this media text. The title implies the cyberbulling factor of the film and these sounds reinforce this element. "A party means presents, money, bling!" is a quote from one of the female characters in the media text's opening 2 minutes. This shows the immature perspective of the characters and also shows that this film is aimed at other teenagers who may appreciate the same things. Another thing said by the main character is "turning 17 doesn't mean anything" showing her ungrateful attitude and that this film is based around teenagers for teenagers.

Mise-en-scene
The clothing the characters are wearing shows their youth and that they may be the popular characters doing the cyberbullying rather than being cyberbullied. The high key lighting suggest happiness and calmness in the opening because the bullying hasn't been touched on yet but there are some hints from the computers, laptops and mobile phones that there will be. The props like computers and mobile phones are significant pieces of iconography because they are the 'weapons' required to cyberbully somebody. The protagonists red Converse are a signifier for youth and the teenage generation of today. The emphasis on them is highlighting the style of the character and the age.

Character
There is still information to be received from the media text, whether the female characters are the bullies or the bullied, which will keep the audience intrigued. There seems to be a good friend and a bad friend which have differences in opinions, allowing for an Angel and Devil effect to hang on the main character. This gives the media text some interesting element of enigma.

Analysing aspects of this film opening in particular has definitely helped me give an approach to our film opening and the sort of content it will include. Cyberbulling is a popular topic to create media about because it is the best way to try and explain to audiences how much people can be affected by it. So by creating a film about the subject in question it not only entertains an audience but teaches young people (target audience of this film) the damaging effects of social networking and bullying on social networking,
